DryDel’s CEO, Costas Delaportas, returns to the TradeWinds Shipowners Forum Japan 2026 in Tokyo.
An excellent discussion about the future of shipping, fleet renewal, geopolitics, AI and the challenges ahead.
A few thoughts shared by our CEO:
Shipping is, and will always remain, a people business. Technology and AI will transform our industry, but even the most advanced tools need well-trained people behind them. After all, giving someone a faster car doesn’t automatically make them a better driver!
The same applies to our vessels. It’s not simply about speed, but achieving the right balance between performance, fuel consumption and operational efficiency.
This is exactly why we continue investing in modern, fuel-efficient newbuildings. Fuel efficiency is not only about reducing emissions; it is also about remaining commercially competitive for the next 15 to 20 years.
And when it comes to shipbuilding, Japan continues to set the benchmark for quality, reliability and attention to detail. Our long-standing relationships with Japanese shipyards are built on something extremely valuable in our industry: trust.
At DryDel Shipping, our investment philosophy remains unchanged:
“We are not buying today’s market. We are buying tomorrow’s fleet.”
The winners of the next decade won’t necessarily be those with the biggest fleets, but those with the right ships, the right people and the ability to adapt.
Many thanks to TradeWinds, Craig Eason and all the panellists for another excellent discussion.
Always a pleasure to be back in Japan!
